Jest autorem publikacji: Turkish Touch in Design, 2007, Contemporary Product Design by Turkish Designers Worldwide, 2007, oraz Turkish Architecture Now, 2009. Zasiada w jury konkursów Aga Khan Award of Architecture oraz The Mies van der Rohe Foundation European Prize for Architecture. Wykładał projektowanie i architekturę na Istanbul Technical University, Bilgi University, Istanbul oraz Politecnico di Milano. Aktualnie pracuje nad wydawnictwami monograficznymi poświęconymi bejruckiemu architektowi Nabilowi Gholam oraz tureckiemu projektantowi Tanju Özelginowi, oraz nad zaawansowanymi badaniami nad włączeniem matematyki średniowiecznej islamskiej architektury w projektowanie obliczeniowe. Kieruje firmą projektującą strony internetowe e|medya.

Gökhan Karakus "Sprawl and synthesis: contemporary architecture's response to informal urban building in Istanbul from the late 1980s until today"

October 25, 2010, Monday, 6 p.m. talk will be held in English

The uncontrolled building in Istanbul from the 1960s to the early 1980s created urban landscapes where formal architecture became an afterthought. Huge swaths of the city were covered in a type of informal vernacular architecture transformed from their rural sources into a new urban vocabulary. Architects in Istanbul working in this period were unable to respond to these dynamics continuing to produce modernist buildings disconnected to this new city. It was only in the late 1980s that a group of younger architects versed in traditional and vernacular architectures started to design in a way that was related to the squatter urbanism. Using morphological, architectonic and iconic strategies, architects such as Nevzat Sayin, Emre Arolat, Han Tümertekin and others attempted to translate the building dynamics of the squatter settlements into contemporary architecture.

Gökhan Karakus is an architectural critic, theorist and designer based in Istanbul, Turkey. His work is concerned with questions of modernity and vernacularism in design and architecture. He is the author of Turkish Touch in Design, 2007, Contemporary Product Design by Turkish Designers Worldwide, 2007, and Turkish Architecture Now, 2009. He has been a contributor to publications including Wallpaper, ID, Artunlimited and icon and is the Editorial Director of Natura, a magazine focusing on contemporary architecture in stone in the Eurasian region. He is a nominator and reviewer for the Aga Khan Award of Architecture and The Mies van der Rohe Foundation European Prize for Architecture.
