Benthem Crouwel została założona w 1979 przez Jana Benthem i Melsa Crouwel i jest jednym z najprężniejszych biur architektonicznych w Holandii. Rok po założeniu biura otrzymali zlecenie rozbudowy i budowy lotniska Schiphol, które trwa do dziś. Wtedy także powstały ikony jak Sonsbeek Pavilion i dom w Almere.
Projekty Benthem Crouwel są bardzo zróżnicowane i obejmują różne skale : od złożonych projektów infrastruktury do projektów wnętrz. Muzea, centra handlowe, uniwersytety, centra muzyczne, projekty urbanistyczne i masterplany zostały zaprojektowane z tą samą pasją.
Do projektów Benthem Crouwel należą: AirportCity Shiphol Airport, rozbudowa Anne Frank House i De Pont, Malietoren, Ziggo Dome i RAI Elicium, Las Palmas w Rotterdamie. Ponadto trwają prace nad przebudową i budową dworców centralnych w Amsterdamie, Rotterdamie, Utrechcie, Hadze czy Delft. Ostatnią wielką realizacją jest rozbudowa i renowacja Stedelijk Museum w Amsterdamie.

Benthem Crouwel was set up in 1979 by Jan Benthem and Mels Crouwel. A year later the office landed its first big commission from Gonvernment Building Agency. Benthem Crouwel became responsible for all border crossing poinds. In addition, the office soon carried out major work, and continues to do so today, at Schiphol Airport. Icons like Sonsbeek Pavilion and house Almere were also completed.
In 1999 Benthem Crouwel was awarded the BNA Cube. The jury viewed the work as ‘of great value to Dutch architectural practice. Despite the complexity of the commissions, the work I marked by its clear structure, pure design and distinct character’.
The commissions are highly varied and span different scales. From complex infractructure projects and public buildings with huge visitor numbers to information desks and interior colour schemes. Museums, shopping centres, universities, buildings for music, assisted living cetres, urban studies and master plan are all designed with the same passion. The projects reveal a fastination with olving complicated problems and, equally, attention to the smallest detail.
Designs by Benthem Crouwel can be restrained like the extension to the Anne Frank House and De Pont, or they can be bold statements like the Malietoren, Ziggo Dome and RAI Elicium. The renovation and extension the Stedelijk Museum and Las Palmas are proof that the combination of old and new procedures enduring results, in harmony with their surroundings and suitable for new functions.
